Now that my alfa is getting new carburetors that won't leak gas into the crankcase i need to get more serious about what oil i put it
the only real things the engine requires is 20w-50 oil plus zddp additives wouldn't hurt.
So, what liquid honey do you put in your engine?
i've been looking at castrol GTX that's 17$ at my local walmart
but i've been using Valvoline max life but locally i've never seen that heavier than 10w-30. I mean 10w-30 will work fine but the engine is nosier with 10w-30

I usually put motor oil in my engine, but I've been known to put valve oil into it as well. Of course, that could have been me mistakingly putting motor oil in my trumpet.
I use 100% synthetic oil, which lasts longer. It is expensive, though.

W/e the manufacturer recommends, or Castrol full sythetic. Or shell rotella in the case of my saabaru.

I put stop leak in it because the valve cover gaskets are impossible to replace.

Personally, Mobil 1. Is it the best? I don't know, but it's all I use. The wagon states Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic 5w20 for the MDS feature. Any other oil and no MDS for me. The SL doesn't specifically say what to use, but I let my shop make the executive decision on 5w40 fully synthetic, as the motor is just about 18 years old and is around 100k miles, and does get used in the cold (though sparingly).
15w50 was an option, but it's really too much to safely use in colder weather, as it can't travel up the oil passages quite so easily, and it causes the motor to effectively run dry for a short period of time. In the summer it doesn't happen (and would be fine), but for all year usage, 5w40.
I've heard good things about Castrol GTX, Mobil 1, and I don't have a reason to shy away from Royal Purple. For the really thick oils, look at NAPA or other smaller parts stores, or if there's a racing/speed shop (there's still a speed shop located close to my house), because they'll either have it, or be able to get it for you. Might even be able to help you with other parts or advice should you need it.

Whatever's on sale (except Pennzoil), as long as it's rated SN or whatever the newest spec is.

I use SAE 80 right now in my 924. It just goes in the top and comes right out the bottom. I'll switch to some normal Dino oil soon.

Castrol EDGE 5W-40 for my dirty diesel GT, Halfords 'Classic' 20W-50 for the Series, and a military spec oil called OMD90 in the Defender. I'm certain none of this is useful to you.

I use Mobil 1, I have heard that Castrol is terrible but I doubt it could be that bad.

I use Traveler's from tractor supply. It comes in big 5 gal jugs and has good petroleum institute certifications.
It helps that all my cars uses 10w30 because murica

Castrol Edge (full synthetic) 10W-30. I also used 5W-30 a couple of changes ago, but it seems smoother on 10W-30. I like Castrol because of Gran Turismo haha

NAPA full synth - it's the good Valvoline product, but half the price. My little Mazda loves the stuff, noticeable difference over ground up dinosaur in both mileage and engine happiness.

Ha I wouldn't. I only do it because the car has been run on it since day zero, and I've heard scare stories of switching from military to standard oil. It's also quite hard to get outside of an army base :/

For the MGA, I figure that any old slop is going to be better than what was available in its day (the manual calls for single-grade 30 weight!). It gets whatever 5- or 10W40 I have lying around, plus a ZDDP additive.
I haven't settled on an oil for the 850R yet. I had it on a full-synthetic Liqui-Moly 10W40, but it was stupid-expensive, and it's been taking a good few seconds to build oil pressure on cold mornings. Despite the turbocharged engine, the manual specifies semi-synthetic, so for now, I've switched it over to Castrol GTX High Mileage 5W30. I'm hoping that it will cut down a bit on the leaks, but even if it doesn't, not having it knock like crazy for the first few seconds after startup will be a plus.

I use synthetic, Amsoil 10W-40 high zinc content (cam/tappet wear prevention, older head designs) in both my Z and my truck. They have two 20W-50 versions as well, one the standard high zinc they've always had, and another newer one marketed under the awful name "Z-ROD". I guess they don't spend their money on marketing people. Anyway, might be worth a look now that you're not losing a lot of oil (leaks|burning + synthetic = $$$). They're here, if you want to look: http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-produc…

I had a 76 Alfa with SPICA. I used 20W-50 Castrol GTX High Mileage and added Marvel Mystery Oil every other fill up for the Injection System and to ward off the Ethanol Demons. Wish I still had it :/

'96 Corvette gets only Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 5W-30. The '90 ZR-1 gets 10W-30 in whatever fully synthetic brand has the best price, because Mobil 1 in that weight is not always available.

Take a look at Valvoline VR1 20w50. Has the ZDDP already in it.

Motul 8100 X-Cess 5w40 in the Porsche 996. From my Amazon review:
I run it in my 996 since it's not only Porsche recommended, but recommended by LN Engineering due to Motul not lowering their ZDDP levels. The top opens up with a funnel, which is great. The only reason the oil doesn't have a fifth star is the $15 increased price compared to Mobil 1, likely due to a lack of American distribution. Still, oil changes only happen every 5,000 miles, so if I could give 4 1/2 stars, I would.

I put the factory Penzoil from the dealership in my 335d because it's under warranty and that's what it calls for. I put Motul 5w40 in my turbo gassers and the heaviest stuff of any brand I can find in my old Subaru and 325e.
